Changing Transfusion Practice

We are in the early stages of making transfusion avoidance the standard of care. We have worked out some preliminary steps so I thought I would share.

Also added is the MMD Algorithm from – Multimodality (MMD) Blood Conservation in Cardiac Surgery - Helm and Rosengert et el. 1998

There have been some changes since 1998. Our hospital is using Lovenox instead of regular heparin in the ER for all Q MI and of course Plavix if they go for stent. We are mining some data on the effect of those products on blood transfusion rates. Our reoperation rate is upper normal.

We are going to tweak the Rosengart MMD using more current product data. Once we create our own MMD we will run it in a trial.

You will need PowerPoint for this one.
