(Old Bridge, N.J. — February 8, 2008) — Hemo Concepts, Inc. today announced its agreement
with St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital in Houston, TX, to implement the company’s Integrated
Blood Conservation Program at the Texas Heart Institute.
The Texas Heart Institute was founded by Dr. Denton A. Cooley in 1962 as a nonprofit
organization dedicated to reducing the devastating toll of cardiovascular disease through
innovative and progressive programs in research, education and improved patient care. Taking a
leading role in new areas of medicine is nothing new at the Texas Heart Institute. Speaking
recently about the Institute’s decision to implement an integrated blood conservation program,
Dr. Cooley said, “Blood transfusion can be abused and I believe it is essential that it is used only
in appropriate circumstances. Blood conservation is essential to the future of surgery and we
have to encourage doctors to follow a conservative (transfusion) policy.”
Dr. Arthur Bracey, Medical Director of the Transfusion Service at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital,
is also the Chairman of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Advisory Committee
on Blood Safety and Availability. In an interview about the impact that integrated blood
conservation can have nationally, Dr. Bracey commented, “There is great variation in practice in
the use of blood …in cardiac surgery,” “Inappropriate transfusions can lead to more
perioperative complications. There are indeed hazards associated with receiving a blood
transfusion…restricting transfusion to when it is needed is in the best interest of the patient.”
“There’s only so much blood to go around in the system and we need to really shepherd the
inventories to make sure they are used appropriately.”
“It’s important when highly regarded institutions like Texas Heart Institute undertake integrated
blood conservation efforts,” said Hemo Concepts CEO, Damon Keeley. “Approximately 20% of
all donor transfusions are given in the cardiac setting. Successful implementation of integrated
blood conservation at Texas Heart Institute will lend great weight to the adoption of integrated
blood conservation in cardiac surgery on a national basis and help reduce blood supply
shortages.”
Hemo Concepts’ Integrated Blood Conservation Program uses an evidence-based outcomes
process, combining on-site training, accredited on-line continuing medical education, and patient
outcomes data analysis to promote appropriate donor blood utilization in hospitals. With patents
pending, the company’s e-BOS ® (Evidence-Based Outcomes System) System utilizes powerful
web-based tools to shorten the educational process, allowing physicians and nurses to quickly
reduce their reliance on donor blood transfusions in patient care.
