CREIGHTON UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER SHINES AS A BEACON IN THE
MIDWEST AS IT ACHIEVES BLOOD CONSERVATION PROGRAM
ACCREDITATION BY THE ASSOCIATION FOR BLOOD CONSERVATION (ABC)
On November 25-26, 2007, Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha Nebraska invited surveyors from
ABC to evaluate their Blood Conservation Program. Mark Eldredge, Manager of the program and Jeffrey
Sugimoto, M.D., Medical Director, proudly displayed how they moved their long-standing “Bloodless Medicine
and Surgery Program,” that treated a comparably few who refused transfusions for religious reasons to a Blood
Conservation Program that is open to all. With the goal of improving patient outcomes, blood conservation is
available for those who wish to benefit from innovative, evidence-based healthcare and techniques while
avoiding or reducing transfusions. This is not something their patients must ask for. Creighton’s physicians
especially Dr. Sugimoto, believe it is better care.
The Association for Blood Conservation is the primary resource for the development and implementation of
formal blood conservation programs. The ABC Administrative and Practice Standards are a benchmark that
provides the foundation, framework and infrastructure of a formal program. The accreditation process provides
assessment and evaluation of program performance and awards accreditation to those programs that
demonstrate compliance with the standards.
Creighton University Medical Center is a full service, teaching hospital in Omaha Nebraska. The ABC
surveyors reviewed the infrastructure of the program that includes but is not limited to policies, procedures,
clinical guidelines, and education. Strong leadership of the program by both Mark and Dr. Sugimoto was very
apparent as well as inclusion of a strong, educated and committed team of healthcare professionals from all
the necessary ancillary and medical departments.
