Hemo Concepts Contracts with Nebraska Methodist Hospital on Blood Conservation

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: February 15, 2006

Hemo Concepts Contracts with Nebraska Methodist Hospital on Blood Conservation

Eatontown, NJ—Hemo Concepts, Inc., an integrated blood conservation company based in Eatontown, NJ, has announced a contract agreement with the Nebraska Methodist Hospital, an affiliate of the Omaha-based Methodist Health System. The arrangement covers Hemo’s state-of-art electronic platform known as e-BOS (Evidenced-based Outcome System).

Developed in 2003, e-BOS is a web-based education program offering two components—training provided by top educators on the development and execution of integrated blood conservation programs; and an electronic-reporting system providing a HIPAA-compliant, evidence-based database allowing hospitals to effectively assess patient and financial outcomes. The deal with Nebraska Methodist includes a 6-month consulting agreement and a 3-year licensing contract.

“The crucial need for blood conservation in the health care arena is something that can’t be denied,” said Damon Keeley, Hemo Concepts Chairman and CEO. “Blood conservation is a major health issue—of national and international scope. Our mission is to make online, evidence-based education the standard of care in the global health-care delivery system. The e-BOSS system lets hospitals provide and monitor effective care—for the patient and the health care institution. Hemo Concepts has the people and products to ensure this vision and we anticipate that many of these deals will close in the months ahead.” Mr. Keeley estimated that the world-wide blood conservation business is a $3.5 billion market.

The Nebraska Methodist Hospital, founded in 1891, is today recognized as a very prominent health-care facility in the region. An annual winner of the National Research Associates’ Consumer Choice Award since its inception in 1996, the hospital’s history lists many health care firsts, including being the first hospital in Omaha to offer lithotripsy treatment for kidney stones and an outpatient surgery center.

Other areas of excellence include women's and senior’s services, oncology, cardiology, orthopedics, neuroscience, and urology. Methodist Hospital is also the area's leading provider of obstetrical care, delivering nearly 4,000 babies annually. The 430-bed acute care medical facility was the first Magnet Hospital in the state, with excellent nursing care. Accredited by Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (JCAHO), the hospital offers surgical/medical health care needs to the community.

“Two factors are converging to make blood conservation very compelling,” explained Deborah C. German, MD, the Medical Advisory Board Director for Hemo Concepts. “One is patient safety and the integrity of the blood supply—present and future. The other is disaster preparedness and the lack of blood supply during these trying events. Given the serious of these issues, the promotion of blood conservation is vital to the goal of competent patient care. The high-quality education and reporting components of the e-BOS system make this goal obtainable.

Today, the nation’s hospitals must absorb escalating blood costs, because Medicare and most health insurance companies do not reimburse for the first three units of transfused red blood cells.

Proven values offered through the implementation of Hemo’s products and services include improved patients and financial outcomes, enhanced patient satisfaction, increased hospital revenues, a disaster preparedness solution, and a reduced demand on the blood supply.
Founded in 1991, Hemo Concepts provides vital education, products, services, and training to hospitals to help reduce the need for donor blood transfusions. Less transfused blood and fewer blood products offer better medical outcomes for the patient and superior financial outcomes for hospitals. Hemo Concepts has existing and developing online education and training relationships with many of the nation’s top hospitals, including Fairview Hospital of the Cleveland Clinic Health System, NYU Hospital, Cabrini Medical Center, and Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center.

Chronic blood shortages, escalating blood costs, the fear of transfusion-related risks, and religious considerations have sparked a growing demand for alternatives to exposure to donor blood transfusions. According to the American Red Cross, the majority of its regional blood service centers operate on less than one day’s supply of blood.“

Hemo Concepts offers a unique platform of products and services, including:

• e-BOS (Evidenced-based Outcome System)—a state-of-the-art web-based program with two components—training provided by top educators on the development and execution of integrated blood conservation programs; and an electronic-reporting system providing a HIPAA-compliant, evidence-based database allowing hospitals to confirm both patient and financial outcomes.

• The Bloodless Medicine and Surgery Institute (www.bmsi.net) —The world’s only education institution for the teaching of and training in integrated blood conservation concepts.

• Integrated Blood Conservation consulting—Contractual agreements that help hospitals to develop blood conservation programs. These programs are integrated because they apply across the whole spectrum of care given at the hospital.

Autotransfusion Services—Technicians who help reduce the amount of blood and blood products used in the operating room by recycling the patient’s blood and blood products.
