A DAMNING review of Australia's blood supply network has found patients are being given transfusions they do not need, putting lives at risk and raising the prospect of the federal government having to rely more on imports to meet demand.
Wasteful and clinically inappropriate practices, coupled with an ageing population - which will increase demand while reducing the pool of donors - threatens to leave the nation without sufficient supplies of blood and blood products.
