Parents Seek Help at DeVos Children’s Hospital

Parent Tammy Asher learned in her 28th week of pregnancy that her son would need a serious operation if he were to live past his first year. Asher’s believes that blood transfusions should be avoided at all costs. Asher sought other hospitals in Michigan who told her a surgery with a blood transfusion is the only option. Asher then found DeVos Children’s Hospital which is one out of five in the United States that offers a pediatrics blood avoidance program.

On June 3, Asher gave birth to a six pound, seven ounce baby boy named Alexander. The diagnosis of a diaphragmatic hernia, a condition in that the liver and the bowel develop in the chest cavity, was confirmed. Within a week baby Alexander underwent a bloodless surgery to correct the condition. The surgery was a success and Alexander was recovering quicker than anticipated. The neonatal staff affectionately called him “Alexander the Great.”
