The
Los Angeles Times reported the death of a hospital patient after receiving one unit of blood platelets that was tainted with E. coli bacteria. The Community Blood Center in Kansas City, David Graham, director of donor recruitment said, “It truly was a tragic incident, and a very rare series of mistakes.” Later, the FDA sent a warning letter dated March 9, chastising the blood center saying its procedures are not always “maintained and followed.”
E. coli bacteria can cause severe diarrhea and abdominal cramps. It can also lead to kidney damage or death in the elderly and young children.
