Red Cross Reports Blood Shortage

Officials Urge People To Donate

POSTED: 4:05 pm EDT April 20, 2006

The Red Cross reported Thursday that there is no type o-blood available to be shipped to local hospitals.

Officials said this can be dangerous because o- is the only blood type that can be safely given to any patient in an emergency.

Members of the Red Cross said this time of year is usually slow because of high school closings for spring break and regular donors going on vacations.

Fortunately, thanks to the ongoing research into transfusion alternatives and those dedicated physicians, nurses, coordinators and hospital administrators who have developed blood conservation programs, there are now real alternatives to donor blood. Blood conservation and transfusion avoidance strategies are clearly going to become the gold standard of medical care, and reliance on donor blood is rapidly becoming yesterday's medicine.
