Woman sues Anaheim hospital over blood transfusion death of her mother
ANAHEIM, Calif. A woman whose mother died after receiving the wrong blood type in a transfusion is suing an Anaheim hospital for the fatal error.
Anaheim Memorial Medical Center said Maxine Elliott's death in February was the only mismatched transfusion-related death the hospital has had.
A blood bank technician mistakenly gave the 81-year-old woman the wrong type blood because there were two people with her last name in the computer system. The hospital says the technician failed to check her first and last name as well as her medical record number.
The hospital said it fired the technician and reported the death to the state Department of Health Services. A state review blamed human error and the hospital began offering more training.
