11-year-old may have HIV from transfusion
VORONEZH, Russia, Dec. 16 (UPI) -- An 11-year-old Russian boy may have contracted
HIV from a blood transfusion, The Moscow Times reported Friday.
The boy is one of 208 residents of Voronezh region who received a blood product called albumin made from the blood of an HIV-positive donor. But regional health official Mikhail Ivanov said the risk of
infection through albumin was "negligibly slim -- not one such case has been recorded in world practice," Itar-Tass reported. Albumin is pasteurized, a process that destroys the HIV virus.
Of the other
patients who had received the albumin, 157 had tested HIV-negative, Ivanov said. The entire group will continue to be tested and monitored.
Prosecutors earlier opened a criminal investigation into whether a 21-year-old woman contracted HIV during a blood transfusion from the donor, a 35-year-old woman who regularly gave blood.
Charges of negligence leading to an
HIV infection carry a prison sentence of up to five years.
The governor of Voronezh region Thursday blamed outdated equipment at the regional blood transfusion center for the 21-year-old woman's infection, RIA-Novosti reported.
