Bloodless Surgery

Monday September 12, 2005 4:16am

Charleston, SC - Roper St. Francis Healthcare is offering a free informative session on its Bloodless Medicine and Surgery Program.

The session will take place Monday (9/12) at 6 p.m. in Roper Hospital's Irene Dixon Auditorium, 316 Calhoun Street.

The program, one of the few of its kind in the Southeast, provides an alternative for patients desiring medical care without the use of blood transfusions.

Last year, a 15 year old Canadian girl was diagnosed with a very aggressive life threatening bone tumor in her leg but she wasn't allowed to undergo treatments because of her religion.

Chemotherapy typically requires at least one blood transfusion. Sarah is a Jehovah's Witness whose beliefs conflicted with the treatment.

Snyder Children's Hospital on Long Island, New York, figured out a way to help her.

Doctors at the hospital, are experienced in medical techniques like stimulating the bone marrow to produce red blood cell and conserving the patient's own blood. Today, Sarah is cancer free.

Those interested in attending Roper St. Francis' informative session should call 843-402-CARE (2273).
