Replacement for blood developed by Korean doctor


September 05, 2005 ㅡ A Korean-American physician claims to have developed a blood substitute that can be used as an emergency measure on patients needing a transfusion who are awaiting a matching blood type.
Kim Hae-won, professor of surgery at the Brown University School of Medicine, is currently conducting animal tests of his hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier, according to the organizing committee of the 7th International Conference on Cellular Engineering. Dr. Kim will present his findings at the conference, which opens in Seoul on Tuesday.
According to Dr. Kim's report submitted to the conference, the oxygen carrier can function as a substitute for red blood cells on an emergency basis and can deliver oxygen to the tissues of a patient waiting for the matching blood type. The blood substitute can be used on all patients, regardless of blood type.
Dr. Kim's work is in the regulatory approval stage, and if approved it could help those who have difficulty in finding a matching blood type and avoid the negative consequences of transfusions. His blood substitute is based on human hemoglobin, and another alternative, bovine hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier, is also under development in the United States.
