Johns Hopkins to test new blood product

Johns Hopkins University's medical school will conduct a 40-patient trial for an artificial blood product developed by a California firm.
San Diego-based Sangart Inc., announced Tuesday a Phase II clinical trial for its product, Hemospan, which is designed to deliver oxygen to body tissues without the need for a blood transfusion.
The product is designed to overcome the problem of blood shortages and avoid transmission of diseases, according to the company. Sangart also says it is compatible among all blood types and can be stored indefinitely.
Dr. Robert Winslow, an expert in the field of oxygen transport, founded Sangart in 1998.
