Hysterectomies can now be bloodless day-care procedure
Thursday May 19 2005 11:09 IST BANGALORE: Removal of uterus or womb (hysterectomy) can now be a bloodless surgery by administering local anaesthesia and causing the patients less pain and lesser post-operative discomforts.
Painless vaginal hysterectomy has emerged after the abdominal and laparoscopic hysterectomies and the new technique was performed for the first time in the country at a private hospital here on Tuesday.
Dr Wolfgang Zubke from the University of Tuebingen, Germany performed the surgery on a 40-year-old woman at Dr B Ramesh Hospital with success.
The surgery under local anaesthesia using ERBE Biclamp, an advanced technique in vaginal surgery is said to have many advantages.
“It’s a day-care procedure and the recovery time is less compared to laparoscopic hysterectomy. It’s a good choice of surgery in patients with uncontrolled diabetes and in case of emergencies,” said Dr P S Eashwarnath of AZ Marketing Private Limited, the distributor of ERBE biclamp in the country.
The cost would be more or less the same as abdominal or laparoscopic surgeries as there is less duration of hospital stay and less use of disposable equipment, he added.
Hysterectomies are done in cases of uterine fibroids (benign tumours that grow in the muscle of uterus), endometriosis (when inside lining of uterus begins to grow outside and on nearby organs), uterine prolapse (in which uterus moves from its usual place down into the vagina), cancers affecting pelvic organs, chronic pelvic pain, heavy bleeding during or between periods.
