Fed: Haemophiliac drug reduces stroke death rate: study
An international study has found a drug used by haemophiliacs significantly reduces
death and disability in people hit by the most lethal type of stroke.
The ground-breaking trial of 399 patients in 20 countries found treatment with the
blood-clotting agent stemmed bleeding in the brain among sufferers of spontaneous brain
haemorrhage -- the least treatable type of stroke.
Melbourne neurologist STEPHEN DAVIS, who's a member of the trial's steering committee,
says both the the death rate and disability in the survivors was reduced.
He says the drug, marketed as NovoSeven shows extreme promise as the first proven
treatment for spontaneous brain haemorrhage.
