Transfusion-Free Medicine and Surgery

Edited By: Nicolas Jabbour, University of Southern California

The field of transfusion-free medicine and surgery is a new discipline that has evolved over the last seven to eight years. The Jehovah’s Witness community initially drove this arena based on their religious belief, which prohibits any blood or blood product transfusion. However, due to the increasing concern about the overall safety of blood and blood products and the shortage of blood, there are an increasing number of patients who are interested in alternatives to blood transfusion. It is also important to note that by law, physicians are obliged to tell their patients about the risk of blood transfusion and the available alternatives such as pre-donation of blood. Soon these regulations will include some, if not most, of the techniques and ideas that will be included in this book. Transfusion-free medicine is accomplished through pharmaceutical therapy, blood conservation and meticulous surgical techniques to minimize blood loss.
  • Discusses controversial issues associated with transfusion-free medicine and surgery.
  • Includes latest research in the field, including the latest techniques in bloodless medicine.
  • MCQ's at the end of the book to serve as an exam for physician certification and act as a CME tool.
