Phillipines - QC patient receives wrong blood type, dies

QC patient receives wrong blood type, dies

By JIMMY PEREZ
TODAY Reporter

The National Bureau of Investigation on Friday recommended for prosecution seven resident doctors of the East Avenue Medical Center (EAMC) in Quezon City and three medical technology personnel for the death of a young mother, who was administered a wrong blood type during a transfusion following a caesarian operation.

On top of the criminal charges, NBI Director Reynaldo Wycoco also recommended the filing of administrative charges against Drs. Socorro Cruz Yanes, chief of EAMC Pathology/Laboratory section, Josephine Chua, Joy Poricalan, Walda Sapla, Ma. Jesusa Planta, Mauricio Francis Acosta and Mylene Cornel, medical technologies Leovie Rea Dolor, Regie Mase and Rosalie Faina.

The accused were held liable for the death of a certain Victoria Deraco, who was transfused with type “A” blood three times before attending doctors realized that her blood type was “B.”

As a result, Deraco’s condition worsened until she became comatose for almost a month since she gave birth on December 16 until she finally succumbed to heart attack on January 6.

Wycoco said the investigation indicated the culpability of the accused, particularly on the simple matter as determining the bloody type of the patient.

It took the effort of another doctor to discover the error after the third-blood transfusion and probers said there appeared to be a concerted effort to cover up, when the accused reported that the transfusion of type “B” blood was only meant to correct anemia.

All the suspects, according to probers, denied the charges but declined further comment.

The Department of Health is conducting a separate probe and the Professional Bureau of Immigration to include the suspects in its watch list.

The NBI recommended before the Quezon City Prosecutors Office to file charges of Regulations Commission is awaiting the result for proper action that may mean either suspension or revocation of license.

Wycoco has requested the reckless imprudence resulting in homicide against the accused.
