I am a JW and I am looking for a Hospital that will perform a bloodless heart transplant. I am 34 years old and I am in congestive heart failure. I have a congenital heart defect(transposition of the great vessels) and in 1978 Denton Cooley performed the mustard procedure on me. I now have an ICD and am on disability. Thank you for your time.

Dana-
My son was in the same position as you a few years ago, he also has a congenital heart defect TGA, thankfullly the right medication has helped and he is no longer on the transplant list. The problem with a transplant in people like yourself and my son is that due to previous corrective surgery the scar tissue and adhesions from the previous operation make it a very high risk of bleeding from the adhesions, add to this the fact that there is not many donor hearts it becomes a real problem for the doctors to risk a heart. With the advances in bloodless surgery I am sure this will be one of those areas that will be overcome as the final frontier of bloodless surgery, however it takes a team that is willing to take risks and lead the way, until then it will be an uphill battle. I tried many hospitals around the world and I believe this operation has not been done bloodless. You will find many will say even on this board that bloodless heart transplant has been done but we are talking here of a person who has not had previous heart surgery where there is no problem of adhesions. I would not give up hope please keep trying, it is not as though it can't be done its finding the team that is willing to break new ground. |
