The Transfusion Myth

By Nancy Malaga

Posted on: October 14, 2009

Judi Almeida suffered from excruciating back pain caused by two fractures in her spine as a result of a car accident. When she told a specialist she could not accept transfusions for religious reasons as a Jehovah's Witness, the specialist refused to perform the surgery.

Gail Thomas needed a full hysterectomy after doctors discovered thickening of her uterus and pre-cancerous cells. Thomas, a Jehovah's Witness, had to find a doctor and hospital that would respect her views on the sanctity of blood.

I run a private hospital in Lagos, Nigeria where patients who were left to die because they refuse transfusion are operated without blood transfusion even with a pre-op Hb of 4.

Went to read the full article. Very interesting. As usual there was a mislead person making a comment. It is sad how people who don't know the facts are ready to condemn based on the ignorance they have been brought up on. The article illustrates the value of sites like this one and the the hard working teams who have dedicated themselves to bloodless surgery.
