Description:Seeking patients with autoimmune hemolytic anemia (especially paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria, PCH) to try Eculizumab (Soliris) in a potential small clinical trial. Eculizumab is FDA-approved for paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) and significantly reduces hemolysis so that most patients can be free of RBC transfusions and other hematologic problems. It acts to block the complement system activity, including the destruction of PNH red blood cells. The major potential risk of eculizumab is increased risk of serious infection with meningococcal bacteria, so that patients should receive meningococcal vaccination at least 2 weeks before using eculizumab. Theoretically, eculizumab may be helpful for blood disorders similar to PNH, but there have not been enough patients in one place to organize a clinical trial and demonstrate effectiveness to the FDA.
