Cool What are your favorite software tools?

What are some of your must have software programs? There are a number programs that I view as indespensible. And since I am often asked what particular tools I use, I will post a message to this thread that will list some of these. Please share some of yours and together we may find ways to use our computers more productively.

I use AskSam Pro to manage and search all the medical information I have gathered over the last 6 years. I find it indispensible.

Incredible, I was a fan of AskSAM when it FIRST came out in the DOS world!!! Clean FAST and SIMPLE!!!!!!! The problem in continue to have is the need to sycronize info on my PC with my PocketPC. For this, I have been using ListPro for desktop AND PocketPC. I am also intrigued with OneNote from Microsoft. Next version is slated to have a LITTLE improvement with sharing info with PPC.

Search Apps - Alternatives to X1 and AskSam

For searching research articles etc I have used InfoSelect for many years. DOS and Window versions.

I have just started using GoogleDesktop and find it very useful. And the best part is that it is FREE!

You can also download a free add-on that allows you to perform OCR a PDF 'image' file. This is also free.

Another add-on allows you to sort the results by file types etc.

As the name suggests it searches your complete desktop and find results in fractions of a second. (After files have been indexed). Greta for finding all thos files, email, etc that your know are on your hard drive SOMEWHERE.

I would be interested to know if anyone feels that X1 or AskSam is better than GoogleDesktop. If so I will investigate them further.

X1 was the best desktop search. I have since tried GoogleDesktop (GDS) and Windows Desktop Search (WDS). I have been favoring the WDS offering for the moment. However, depending on the kind of data you wish to include in your searches, you may choose accordingly. For example, I like to use Mindjet Mindmanager (MM). There are MM WDS filters. I would like to also be able to search Access MDB data. WDS DOES NOT have plugin to index this data whereas GDS DOES!!!!

Bottom line is, what ever Desktop search is used, they are VERY helpful.

For this reason, although I like the power of ListPro which I can sync with my PocketPC, I am migrating my notes back to Outlook notes SO THAT WDS will FIND the data!!!! This demonstrates how you can become more and more reliant on Desktop search programs.

Smile Software tools

It all depends on what you want your search engine to do. I made a decision early in my medical research career that I wanted to store all the medical articles, papers, etc, that I have either scanned or downloaded, in one database that can import files of the most popular types and handle them in free-form (full text plus graphics).
AskSAM meets my criteria perfectly. It can import word processing documents, files from other popular databases and spreadsheets, .PDF files. It also handles content from several popular e-mail clients as well HTML pages, so you can import e-mails and web pages. Once in askSAM, all of these documents can be searched. With thousands of pages of information on file I can run a search for specific medical information and locate it very quickly. Then I can print it, or export it as text, rich text, .CSV, .DAT, or HTML. You can also store the results of these searches for future refernce.

I think askSAM takes some beating, but of course, not everyone would have a need for such a program. Horses for courses!
