Thread: Cryoprecipitate AHF

Cryoprecipitate AHF /, Fresh frozen plasma (FFP) is separated from a unit of whole blood. When FFP is thawed in the cold, a cryoprecipitate forms that is rich in fibrinogen, factor VIII, von Willebrand factor, factor XIII, and fibronectin. The concentrated precipitate is then suspended in a fluid medium, often plasma. Given to patients with coagulation problems to prevent catastrophic bleeding during surgery or obstetric procedures; also used in the preparation of fibrin glue.

Just a word on the glossary. The definition for cryos was somewhat different than what I was familiar with. I am not sure if our definition for cryoprecipitate is worded correctly. Could someone else take a look at it and verify it's accuracy? Below is the difinition the American Red Cross gives for the product.


Cryoprecipitated AHF
This product is prepared by thawing Fresh Frozen Plasma between 1 - 6° C and recovering the precipitate. The precipitate is refrozen within one hour. Cryoprecipitate AHF contains coagulation factors Factor VIII, Factor XIII, fibrinogen, von Willebrand factor, and fibronectin. The product contains approximately 10 mL of plasma and is stored frozen. The shelf life is one year.
