Iron Dextran
A medication that can be given by injection. Iron is a necessary building block for red blood cells. Under normal conditions, the body maintains a good supply of iron in storage. However, in cases where there are digestive tract difficulties (e.g. ulcers, Crohn's disease,, etc.) enough iron may not be absorbed by the digestive tract and, in this case, it may be necessary to give iron by injection. Iron dextran can augment erythropoietin if they are given together. The two most familiar forms of iron dextran include Imferon and Infed.
