What Is Humira

I would like to know if Humira has any blood fractions. My son is due to have surgery on his hip and his doctor suggested this medication. I know nothing about it and would appreciate professional guidance.

The active ingredient in Humira is Adalimumab. I researched this and found the following description:

Adalimumab is a synthetic (man-made) protein, similar to human protein, that binds to TNF in the body and thereby blocks the effects of TNF...

This was found here

Adalimumab is basically a very specific antibody that binds itself to a specific substance. These are the little guided missiles (silver bullets) scientics are working on to "cure" things like Crohns, cancer.

The mab at the end of the word is discussed below:

Monoclonal antibodies (mAb or moAb) are monospecific antibodies that are identical because they are produced by one type of immune cell that are all clones of a single parent cell. Given (almost) any substance, it is possible to create monoclonal antibodies that specifically bind to that substance; they can then serve to detect or purify that substance. This has become an important tool in biochemistry, molecular biology and medicine. When used as medications, the generic name ends in -mab (see "Nomenclature of monoclonal antibodies").

Though the original antibody was produced in a human it is now made recombinantly so it doesn't qualify as a blood fraction.

Recombinant

The production of recombinant monoclonal antibodies involves technologies, referred to as repertoire cloning or phage display/yeast display. Recombinant antibody engineering involves the use of viruses or yeast to create antibodies, rather than mice. These techniques rely on rapid cloning of immunoglobulin gene segments to create libraries of antibodies with slightly different amino acid sequences from which antibodies with desired specificities can be selected.[6] These techniques can be used to enhance the specificity with which antibodies recognize antigens, their stability in various environmental conditions, their therapeutic efficacy, and their detectability in diagnostic applications.[7] Fermentation chambers have been used to produce these antibodies on a large scale.

Tnf blocker

Its chemical name is Adalimumab

This is a human immunoglobulin, (IgG1) monoclonal antibody which has been designed to block TNF

Tumor Necrosis Factor or TNF, is a cytokine which is involved in the inflammatory process.

Therefore blocking TNF is useful in inflammatory disorders like
    • moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in adults. HUMIRA can be used alone or with methotrexate or with certain other medicines. HUMIRA may prevent further damage to your bones and joints and may help your ability to perform daily activities.
    • moderate to severe polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) in children 4 years of age and older. HUMIRA can be used alone or with methotrexate or with certain other medicines.
    • psoriatic arthritis (PsA) in adults. HUMIRA can be used alone or with certain other medicines. HUMIRA may prevent further damage to your bones and joints and may help your ability to perform daily activities.
    • ankylosing spondylitis (AS) in adults.
    • moderate to severe Crohn’s disease (CD) in adults who have not responded well to conventional treatments. HUMIRA is also for these adults who have lost response or are unable to tolerate infliximab.
I personally have not used or heard of this drug till this post but am grateful as one of my friends suffers from AS and this could be useful info.

Thank You

I would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone for taking the time to address my question. I "acquired" my son when he was 10 and of course his health does concern me. I understand he was diagnosed with celiac disease when he was two but does not address this with his diet. I cannot help but feel he is not acquiring the necessary nutrients to main his health and that a lot of his pains are due to the body not being able to utilize what he is eating. I understand gluten is his worst enemy and of course the body seems to react by initiating an inflammatory process which affects every part of the body, including the joints.

Again, thank you for taking the time to research and share the information. He will be glad to hear that blood is not part of Humira.
