You could start by discussing the recent trend to make transfusion medicine evidence based. Here is one resource: Evidence-based transfusion medicine
Then you could refer to the professional associations that have sprung up in the last decade to provide clinicians with information about the alternatives to blood transfusion. Here are a few: 1. Bloodless Medicine Research 2. NATA > Welcome to the Network for Advancement of Transfusion Alternatives 3. SABM | Society for the Advancement of Blood Management 4. ...::::bloodmanagement.org::::... |

Grand Round
Of course a medical grand round is often much more than a general position or state-of-the-art overview. Do you mean to narrow your discussion to focus on reducing the use of banked blood products or are you giving a talk about the effect of various clinical approaches on outcomes? Are you in fact giving the big picture with a brush past the "Alternatives" category?
In our field, the reduction of blood transfusions through the use of alternative treatment modalities, we have seen a slight shift in the way we use EPO. We also see the slow emergence of "synthetic" oxygen carriers. We have seen the gradual yet steady acceptance of lower hemoglobin in pre and post op patients. Autologous Platelet gel is helping reduce perioperative blood use. etc.

thank you for your reply. my plan is to show costs and risks involved with transfusion and spend most of my time on overview of bloodless medicine as it is a totally new concept for me. this will include data that shows that it works and also to outline all the ways you can conserve blood and what are the means to limit transfusions.
any help you can give regarding info on bloodless medicine will be greatly appreciated esp if you have any current us data or any presentations on this topic |
