Hi Jan, My brother-in-law died yesterday. No, he wasn't a transplant or renal patient, he had pnuemonia 6 yrs ago that required hospitilization, he was not anemic prior to getting admitted, his count was at 8.5, it got progressively worse, the lowest being 1.5, he was not discharged, he was 47 yrs old, yes he smoked for 3 years but had quit 1 yr ago. He went in complaining of shortness of breath and bad lower back pain. Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Fontana, California neglected his needs for bloodless treatment and let him die. Thank-you for responding to my e-mail, I was just too late.

Aine,

Know your SPOT ! (Specialist Practitioners of Transfusion)

Please email me and I will put you in touch with several of these nurses who have been instrumental in reducing unnecessary and preventable blood transfusions.

Connie,

I am saddened by your loss. That is foremost. You need time to support your Sister and to grieve. Later perhaps we could discuss this case at greater length to determine what might be learned.

Again, sorry for your loss.

Jan
