Please join us to hear physician presentations (1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m.) on the latest techniques in blood management, and to see demonstrations of the heart-lung machine and hemodilution equipment which minimizes blood loss during surgery. Take advantage of free health screenings for blood pressure and body mass index. Dermascan skin screenings will be available and limited anemia screenings. Why "transfusion-free?" Nationwide, increasing numbers of hospitals are implementing transfusion-free medicine and surgery because of the many advantages for patients. Evidence has shown that this approach to medical care is associated with • Improved outcomes • Less exposure to emerging viruses and infections • Faster recovery time • Reduced post-operative infections. What does "transfusion-free" mean? Transfusion-free medicine and surgery is a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to patient care. It involves strategies that stimulate blood cell production and techniques to minimize blood loss, with the goal of eliminating blood transfusion. Patients choose transfusion-free medicine and surgery for personal, ethical or religious reasons. For everyone, it is simply good medical practice. The Rhode Island Hospital team leaders Dr. Hieu Ton-That is a trauma and critical care surgeon and general surgeon. As medical director, in addition to providing clinical care for patients under his supervision, he directs the medical aspects of transfusion-free care and advises other physicians and surgeons in blood conservation techniques. Kevin Wright brings many years of experience in bloodless medicine and blood conservation to his role as manager. He works closely with all patients who stipulate transfusion-free medicine, coordinating their care and providing appropriate directives. He acts as liaison among patients, families, physicians and staff. Kevin T.
