Fibrinogen
Also called factor I, fibrinogen is a protein in the blood plasma that is essential for the coagulation of blood. Fibrinogen is converted to fibrin by enzymatic action of thrombin and ionized calcium in the formation of a blood clot. A lack of fibrinogen may be congenital or acquired. The excessive utilization and depletion of fibrinogen can result in the condition known as
Disseminated Intravascular Coagulopathy (DIC).
