HBOC's were pulled from the market. Death and complication rate was too high. This is partially due to the fact it is "Free" hemoglobin not contained in a red blood cell. Free hemogloblin can escape blood vessels and damage organs such as the kidneys and liver. -source of info is U.S. gov't - see other post about them no longer available.
