Cost of unit of red cells in the United States

Hello Everyone:

Preparing a presentation and would like to know the current cost or range of cost for a unit of red cells in the United States.

Is there a cost difference between leukoreduced and non-leukoreduced?

References would be appreciated.

Thanks for your help.

Lightbulb Red Cell Costs

It would depend what you mean by cost. Most use leukoreduced. If you want to know what Blood Centers charge hospitals, or what the patient is charged and what is reimburseable, and if you are including all the tests needed for administration as well as administration costs. You can check with your accounting department to see what they pay for the product. Patient accounts can tell you what they can charge for and how much is reimburseable. Revenue codes used to bill for blood services will vary depending on whether the blood is transfused, bought or stored. If you are a member of AABB, they have a reimbursement guide for blood products and services that is helpful to understand what costs are included. Red Cross can also be contacted to give you the median acquistion cost for hospitals since they are a primary provider of blood products and related services to over 3,000 hospitals and other health care providers. They supply about half of the nations's blood products for patient transfusion needs.

Thank you for the information. Re: Canadian cost, I have a figure as published in "Bloody Easy" and will look to the AABB for comparison costs.

Thanks again.

Susan

Cost

If you aren't doing exact reporting the general cost is $150-$275 per unit acquisition cost. I have a slide for you but won't be able to send it until this afternoon. If you are looking at transfused cost it is very easy to make a case for $500 per unit. That includes all tests plus labor and hardware to put it into the patient.

Tim Hannon included four studies in a recent article that showed blood used in cancer centers can run as high as $850 per unit transfused.

You can make a distinction between Acquisition Cost, amount paid an outside blood bank plus hospital side test vs Direct Cost, which adds the hospitals costs i.e. storage, transporting, T&C, labor, hardware etc.

Let me know if you want me to email the Power Point slides .

Jan
