Thread: What can be used to stop bleeding from Crohn's Disease?

What treatment can be used to stop bleeding, due to a flare up from Crohn's Disease in a 14yr. old?

He is currently on, Omeprazole, Prednisone, Flagyl, 6MP, Pentasa, and iron tablets.
At the moment, he is having a bad flare up with, a lot of bloody diarrhea, his potassium level is very low, and he is lethargic as well. He also has a very poor appetite and when he eats he gets bad stomach pains. His doctor has mentioned the possibility of inserting a central line for a feeding tube.

We are Jehovah's Witnesses and so we of course do not allow for blood transfusions. His doctor today, mentioned the possibility of a blood transfusion and then remembering we were Jehovah's Witnesses, said to never mind and forget she said that ( Though of course we can't, knowing that she could very well have a transfusion in the back of her mind ).

Does anyone have any suggestions/therapies that could be used to successfully treat bleeding from crohn's disease?

As odd as it sounds have you looked into Cayenne (Capsaicin)? Talk to a holistic heath practitioner and some information on the Web. Here is a quote from< http://www.shirleys-wellness-cafe.com/cayenne.htm>

It is a good idea to always have some Cayenne extract on hand for emergencies. Dr. Anderson carries capsules of cayenne with him in the car and whenever he goes hiking, backpacking or mountain climbing. The following stories demonstrate only a few of the remarkable emergency uses of cayenne. One radical approach (that, remarkably enough, isn't quite so radical as many of the medications you have mentioned) is a dietary shift. You will need to be very careful about doing so; reduce the carbohydrates slowly- but you can get rid of the wheat immediately. Here's what to do:

1) Celiac diet (no barley, no rye, no oats, no wheat). Very strict- not so much as a crumb.

2) Reduce carbohydrates to <72 grams/day. Do this slowly; in all likelihood, your child will adapt to this in a period of time, but you don't want constipation.

If you need to know why, read "Life without bread" by Dr. Wolfgang Lutz. Crohn's is probably caused by an organism called Klebsiella; your doctors will not be aware of this. They would need to read several research papers by the Ebringer group in the UK. A PubMed search will bring up the appropriate works.

Anyway- no bread, and low-carb. It will take several months, but my own blood values normalized after a year. Within 2 months, the bleeding had stopped. Within 6 months, my hematocrit etc. were back to normal.

I don't know what country you are from but, in some countries or certain parts of countries youths his age have been determined to be mature enough to make their own decision by judges and sometimes by doctors or ethics committees, if they know why their religion refuses blood and show that they believe it themselves, and are completely aware of the consequences of their actions. This may be a good idea just in case.

The HLC which can be contacted by your local elders may have some advice.

You may also talk to the doctor about tolerating low hemoglobin levels. I'm not a doctor so I don't know how this works with Crohns disease.

Chlorophyll has been very effective for blood loos. Research chlorophyll transfusions as a replacement for blood to build up his blood again. I know your pain. I have a 16 year old diabetic with a lot of health problems. We all need help at times.

Sorry to hear that things are out of sorts, but it should not be that difficult to turn things around.

Do you happen to know his hemoglobin level, platelet count, ESR, and PT/PTT? His last vitamin D level?

First, realize that all six of the medications you cited can, in some way, increase the chance of bleeding. Once he is on the mend, start to wean them.

Second, start green smoothies. This will supply a fair amount of vitamin K, minerals like potassium, and enzymes. It would actually be helpful to enrich them with a product like Green Vibrance. Until the bleeding stops, ask the doctor to prescribe vitamin K 5mg per day. Smaller doses are available OTC. Certainly, you would want to avoid cow's milk and gluten and any food that comes in a box.

Other supplements to start, if not on them already, include adequate vitamin D, probiotics /fermented foods, and krill oil. It may be helpful to read books such as The Maker's Diet by Jordan Rubin or Healing Inflammatory Bowel Disease by Paul Nison. Body Ecology Diet by Donna Gates will also be extremely helpful.

Do you know if Liquid Chlorophyll can be given intravenously? He is autistic and may not tolerate the taste.

Yes, it has been done. But not common. It's new. Try putting it in a great tasting smoothie, like a milkshake. It will dramatically improve his blood count and so much more. Until the new system, hang in there!

Do you know if the Chlorophyll tablets are as effective as the liquid form?

I would try using the powdered form. Also, you may want to try activated charcoal for controlling the diarrhea. It will help a lot. Keep in mind the chlorophyll is a detox, so start off slow. Also, chlorophyll comes in many other forms. Take a look in the greens area of your local health food store.
