Low Hb
![]() Hb last checked September 2008 and was 'normal', checked again last week and found to be 7g. GP has prescribed iron and Norethistorine with a review appointment in 2 months. Feeling tried and suffering from shortness of breath, I work full time and have 3 young children and have no energy, is there anything I can do during this 2 month period to improve my health? |

Here are some support supplements that will give your body the help it needs to build RBC: qFolic Acid 2 mg po daily qVitamin C 500 mg po daily qVitamin B-12 (check dosing recommendations) Next question: Are abnormally high rates of bleeding common during your period? Does it run in your family? Has the GP considered sending you to a Gynecologist? Did your GP give orders to return ASAP if the heavy bleeding doesn't curtail? If he didn't then you need to be proactive. Don't wait past the number of days he said it should take. Even a single high dose of EPO would help get you started. Two over ten days would be better. All the best to you.

I have a friend who was going through a simular problem. Her menstrual periods were very heavy, and her OB/GYN had found that she had fibroids. He recommended a hysterectomy, but with a Hgb count of 7.2, that would need to be corrected before surgery. After a visit with the hematologist, she was started on iron infusions, which correct the underlying iron deficiency much more quickly then taking an iron supplement by mouth. She received a treatment twice a week for 6 weeks, and now has her Hgb count up to 12.7 and is scheduled for surgery in a couple of weeks. Her hematologist opted not to use EPO, but adding that to the treatment would have helped also.
The fact that you work full time may cause some scheduling problems (the iron infusions take about 1 to 1 1/2 hours of your time), but you will be able to get the underlying iron deficeincy corrected much more quickly...and ultimately be feeling better in a shorter period of time. |
