RH Disease - Already Sensitised

Hi all,

First post here. Here is my story and subsequent question:

My wife and I are JW's. My wife is Rhesus Negative and I am Rhesus Positive. About 5 years ago we gave birth to a daughter who had Rhesus Positive blood like myself. It seemed that late on in the pregnancy my wife had a bleed and about a week before the birth she started to produce anti-D herself and fight against our daughter. When she was born she had jaundice and received light therapy, Iron, Folic Acid and in the end EPO injections of which she stabilised and is now very healthy. After all this the normally administered Anti-D injection was futile due to my wife producing it herself. Now that she is sensitised we were told all future pregnancies were out of the question unless we were prepared to accept a blood transfusion to the future baby if it was determined that it was again Rhesus Positive and was in a distressing anaemic condition. This is obviouslly out of the question with us and I was hoping that there surely are some other methods available.

We vistited Kings Hospital in London about 2 years ago and they gave no real hope. My limited research thus far has led me to believe that there is little chance of another child and whilst we are lucky to have Alicia and have battled with the desire to even want a 2nd or 3rd we would just like to know if we have a choice or not. I have apparently a negative strain in my blood type which indicates a 50/50 chance of a baby being Rhesus Negative in the future, however our daughter was Positive so that really does not count for much.
If anyone perhaps in other countries is able to provide any help we would very much appreciate it. We are based in England, UK and would love to hear any more uptodate examples of this kind of problem.

Thanks

There was someone who posted on here who had the same problem
they reported having many more children, its not my decision but finding a surrogate mother or adoption may'be/are viable options

Thoughtfully expressed summary. You could look into plasmapheresis. This would have to be done throughout pregnancy to remove the anti-D. It would be challenging. The citation (reference 77) mentions a Dr. Robinson from England who treated 35 patients this way. Try to look this doctor up.

RH negative sensertized mother of 3

Hi i am a RH negative mum who was sensertized in my first pregnancy

my daugter was born full term and needed 5 days of photothrepy and on going folate and iron supplaments

My second son required 4 intrauterine transfusions starting at 24 weeks and had dopplers done every week to moniter the levels and was enduced and born at 36 weeks weighing 3360kg 4 days of photo therepy then needing a further transfuition 2 weeks after he was born now he's 2yrs happy and healthy boy!
My 3 son which is 13 weeks old now. He required 4 intrauterine transfusions starting at 19 weeks and i was also on IVIG once a week until he was born. he was also monitored by dopplers once a week.
He was born at 31weeks weighing 1790kg due to the last transfution brought on labour which is always a risk!(but had a natural birth) he had 3 days of photo therepy had trouble holding food down and started 4 days after birth on tube feeding 2ml every 2 hours and building it up every day i had my first cuddle when he was 5 days old!!! he was in hospital for 7 weeks. He's had 3 transfusions since he was born last one 2 weeks ago now he also needs an apnea monitor as he stops breathing when he sleeps and we need to remined him. Which is due to his anemia he will need it untill 6months of age he now weighs 3350kg smiles goos and gaars fully breast fed we are nearly at the end just waiting for him to make his own blood.

I think its a matter of how much you can handle to have a baby and you belifes i would do it all again to have my kids but medically ive gone as far as i can as every pregnancy the transfuitions will need to begin earlier and at 19 weeks that was a miricle in itself.

Good luck i hope this helped just remeber everyone is different all my babies are rh posative as my husband is homazigus ++ so there was no chance of having a RH - baby.

2nd Pregnancy

Hi All,
I am new to this group. I have been searching for something like this for some time, and I couldnt have found it at a better time! I just found out that I am expecting my second child. I am 7 weeks along. I too an Rh negative. I was sensatized in my first pregnancy due to tripping over my xhusbands dog and ripping a pin hole in my placenta.

I saw an OBGYN specializing in high risk pregnancies. We spoke about some of the options and treatments out there. She didnt recognize the plazma transfusion as an option, but I am going to speak to her again about that. I am going armed with some literature I found on the procedure.

Thing is there isnt anything they can do for the baby until the 20th week. I am not a Jehovia Witness, and I am not apposed to receiving WHAT EVER medical services that are out there that will help my baby come into this world as healthy and safely as possible. (please do not think I am knocking anyones beliefs cause I do believe to each their own)..........

I am scared out of my ever living mind..... I have so many fears right now, but my biggest one is that these anti bodies will attack the baby sooo badly that we wont make it to the 20th week where he/she will be able to receive treatment.

I have read several stories out there that are somewhat inspiring...but I am very very very very very scared! I can't focus..... I can't concentrate at work..... I cry randomly (which I know is my hormones but also for the fear)

Just looking for some support/advise/what ever ya got!
Thank you !

Hi there, I have just come across this website and have seen your post... My husband and I are also JW's and are in the same position as yourself. I had a bleed during my first pregnancy which resulted in our son developing Rhesus Disease. We have been told that we only have a 2% chance of conceiving a baby with a negative blood type so our odds are not good! I was just wondering if you have had any success in your search for an alternative treatment? There doesn't seem to be much out there from what I have seen. Thanks, Dee

Hi

Good to hear from you. We have not been able to find out much. I had hoped to talk to someone on this Post via a recommendation. I believe they are a JW Doctor in USA, who has experience with this. Feel free to [send me a private message] to talk further and maybe share ideas moving forward.

Take Care,

Mark
