Can a Nurse Practicioner prescribe blood or one of the 4 main components?
I guess I should clarify a little. This is in the USA. I know of a patient that had a low platelet count. She was in the hospital for another problem. A NP was suggesting a platlet transfusion. I didn't know if the NP would have to get a MD 's approval or if the NP was able to prescribe this or any of the 4 main components.
Thanks LeeC PS the patient told the NP that she didn't accept any blood, and is doing better now |

We have neonatal nurse practitioners working in our NICU, and yes, they are able to order blood products. I don't know if the laws are the same for every state, but in Texas, NP's can order blood/blood components.
