Can a Nurse Practicioner prescribe blood or one of the 4 main components?



I guess I should clarify a little. This is in the USA. I know of a patient that had a low platelet count. She was in the hospital for another problem. A NP was suggesting a platlet transfusion. I didn't know if the NP would have to get a MD 's approval or if the NP was able to prescribe this or any of the 4 main components.

PS the patient told the NP that she didn't accept any blood, and is doing better now

We have neonatal nurse practitioners working in our NICU, and yes, they are able to order blood products. I don't know if the laws are the same for every state, but in Texas, NP's can order blood/blood components.
