Question Looking for a Surgeon..

Hello. I am looking for a surgeon that will perform a pulmonary valve replacement on my husband without blood. He was born with Tetralogy of Fallot and had 2 attempted repairs when he was 10, but for some reason neither was sucessful. He is now 34 and generally pretty healthy. His main concerns when it comes to the surgery are that he has severe scoliosis so things are a bit misplaced. Also, one of his lungs is collapsed with only a very tiny part being used. The other lung is fully functioning. Other than that, he is doing well. We live in Western KY and would love to find a Dr that is not too far away, however, if we have to travel, we will. Can anyone help??
THANKS! Patti

Looking for a surgeon

I thought you might be interested in this article, which reports a study done by a surgeon at the University of Kentucky.

University of Kentucky News -- news.uky.edu

I'll keep my eyes open for any other possible sources for such a surgeon in your area.

Thumbs up Thanks

Thanks for the article. I appreciate your help. It had many good points to keep in mind. The last Dr. we saw in Nashville, Tn said that my husband is too small (he is only 110 lbs and 5 ft) and therefore has a low blood volume to start with. He said he would do the surgery - but there is a 20-30 percent chance he wouldn't survive it w/o blood. There is no rush at this point and we are looking into having the valve replace with a percutaneous procedure (where the valve is placed doing a catherization type process). So we are trying to find out some information on that. Thanks again for your help and do let me know if you find anything out. We would be willing to travel north (boston or NY) if needed. Take care.. Patti

My 89 year old Mother had here aortic valve replaced in February 2007 by Scott Scheinin, M.D. here in Houston, Texas. Like your husband, she is a small woman (weighs in at just under 100 pounds), and because of severe osteoporosis, has a very pronounced curvature to her back. Dr Scheinin did a wonderful job, and is the medical director of the Bloodless Medicine program at St Joseph Hospital. You might want to contact the program coordinator Jessica Varisco at 713-756-8029.

If you are one of Jehovah's Witnesses please ask the elders in your congregation for a couple of names of the Hospital Liaison Committee that serve your area. I am sure they can help with ffilling your needs.
