Myelodysplastic Syndrome
My mother has been diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome. Currently her red blood count is at 2.6 and her white blood count is low and she has pneumonia. We are waiting for a test to come back to help us determine what type of myelodysplastic syndrome she has. She will not be taking any blood transfusions. I know that there are a couple of drugs that can be taken based on what type of MDS she has, but at this point we are relying on EPO and Neupogen to try to bump up her blood counts.
Right now we are trying to determine what options we have. We are in a small town hospital and considering going to a larger one, but the closest MDS specialized hospital is 4.5 hours away and I actually live across the country.
Is this hopeless or do we have any chance?
