procrid and blood transfusions

my dad had been givin many injections of procrid. now ins. wont cover it so the doctor wants to do blood transfusions. i believe it will be 4 transfusions once a week. i have been told it is because red cells over taking the white? a number of years ago he had been seeded for prostate cancer. could this be a result of that? also he was getting the procrid once a week for months and the doctor was telling him there was not a great change in the blood
