Hi, my son was diagnosed with Leukemia April 16th,2008, his platelets were at 38,000 and on the 6th of May they were 163,000, (even though he gets some form of Chemo almost everyday). I dont know if it works but the doctors here in Germany are surprised... we give him 3 times a day about 1/2 cup of fresh orange juice and carrot juice mixed together with a drop of vegetable oil. This a receipe from South America where people are so poor they increase their blood count by drinking this "juice" several days in advance! In addition he receives Aloe Vera (to clean out the poison from the Antibiotics and help his stomach lining) and Colostrum (it strengthens the whole body and helps his immune system... he has not had a cold since the illness broke out, even though his white blood counts are at only 1000!). It would be great if some one could let me know if this "juice" was successful or not, thanks!!

AS with all "natural" or "folk" remedies, any evidence for the efficacy of juices to raise platelet counts is purely anecdotal and very subjective. What may appear to work for one person may do nothing for another. This website prefers to focus on therapies that have been tested in rigorous clinical trials. The two drugs that have had the best medically proven results for increasing platelets are Neumega (synthetic Interleukin-11) and Eltrombopag (synthetic thrombopoietin). Prednisone (which is a steroid) can also help to increase platelet production.

See:
Interleukin 11, Neumega, Oprelvekin -- UnderstandingCancer.tv (Neumega)
Eltrombopag Improves Thrombocytopenia in Patients with Cirrhosis (Eltrombopag)
NEJM -- Mechanisms of response to treatment in autoimmune thrombocytopenic purpura (prednisone)

I regret that my husband did not try any of the recent drugs to improve platelet counts. At the end, he essentially bled to death from all orifices. bety

Raising Platelet Count

I know of a couple of natural supplements that can aid in building red blood cells. Please check with your doctor and contact me if you would like more information. I don’t care for how these products are marketed but neither do I like how pharmaceuticals are marketed by their reps.!
1) a special extract from a natural product that has been clinically studied and published in a medical journal to show that 2 capsules can raise the number of circulating stem cells by 2 to 3 million. When taken over a few days it can have an impact on blood counts. Studies have shown that increasing stem cells is a fine way of restoring proper platelet counts.
2) A special tincture of at least 10 herbs and plants and 4 different essential plant oils. Since infection can reduce platelet counts the adding of essential oils help also with the infections!
Many were used by native American Indians to help purify and build the blood. Rehemogen Tincture can be easily taken 3 droppers full in water two to three times a day to help support low platelet counts.
Support extra stem cell production and using this special tincture is an excellent way of building the blood!
Stan

I cannot find any literature on platelets but with a family member we were able to boost the GSH (glutathione) which boosted the blood in less than 30 days pre-surgery.

The doctors were likewise impressed and commented on the shorter than normal healing. (He is on the wrong side of 70.)

There are two products in North America and one in Germany and soon one in the orient that studies demonstrate increased blood count. The increase was a side effect and not the focus of the study with either of these products. Both are used in the hospital and in various medications. Both are in the Physicians Desk Reference. What is unusual is that both are also marketed over the counter also.

Unfortunately I did not look at platelets when researching them. Theoretically, boosting your GSH should also raise platelets. Even if it did not it should boost the immunity and reduce oxidative stress. If you want more info please PM me and I can put you in touch with one of the doctors in my network who is an expert in boosting GSH.

One of the two, the chemical version of the essential amino-acid that makes glutathione is contraindicated with chemo-therapy, peptic ulcers, organ transplants and some antibiotics. The natural version only has a contraindication with organ transplant.

This study (cut and paste it to see it... Response of selenium status indicators to suppleme...[Biol Trace Elem Res. 2008] - PubMed Result) shows an interesting correlation to selenium and GSH. Selenium incidentally is one of the cofactors needed for the body to produce GSH. By the way, you cannot take GSH as the body breaks it down and it becomes nonabsorbent. What ever you do in this regard you will need to run by a doctor knowledgeable in the use of these.

I am not saying the name of these until more research is available.

It does appear that the Glutathione disease cure properties will benefit numerous diseases in addition to boosting the blood count.

NEW>>> The FDA just approved Amgen signature drug, Nplate – the first and only approved platelet producer that helps patients fighting a rare bleeding disorder called immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP).

You need to be advised that the adverse reactions with Nplate included fibrous deposits in the bone marrow, drop in platelet count to below pre-treatment levels upon drug discontinuation, a form of blood cancerdefine, and risk of blood clots should excessive platelets be produced.

Raising platelet count

Carmencita: Take a look at the posts above yours in the thread. There are several suggested substances that might be tried. I hope one of them works for you.

Interesting thing happened to my husband when he had West Nile Virus (from a mosquito bite). He has ITP and his blood platelet count normally goes from 22,000 to 60,000. We've tried various natural remedies to try to raise his platelets, but they never remain constant. Always up and down. BUT when he had the West Nile Virus, his platelet count went up to 225,000. Hematologist suggested it might have been stress steroids that his system produced. Now he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer and ongologist wants to do radiation seed implants. But he wants to raise his platelets with Prednisone six weeks prior to surgery. Has anyone had success with this treatment? Blood transfusions are a no no! Thank you for any input you may have.
