I was recently attending a conference in Adelaide, where I heard that the use of a cell saving device during revision of THR with a Titanium prosthesis was contra-indicated. This was due to the microscopic particles of metal spreading to spleen, liver and lymph nodes etc. As this was the first time I heard of it, I investigated and found several articles mention this problem of metal and ceramic particles being found during routine autopsies etc.
Could anyone shed some light on this please?
1/ Does this problem cause any life-shortening effects on the organs involved?
2/ Does the use of a cell-saver increase the distribution of these particles during revision surgery?
I could think of many more questions, but that will do for now.
I have a professional, and personal interest in this.
