Poor response to EPO treatment in septic shock

Hi, please excuse my clumsiness, I am new to NoBlood. My wife suffers from Lupus and Thalassemia, for which she receives treatment and she can live a relatively normal life. Due to the steroids she takes she has a very low defense system.
At present she is in hospital in an induced coma with a septic shock. Her condition is very critical. The inflamation has gone down due to the antibiotics she received, but her Hb remains very low (3,5 to 4,5). Doctors are very cooperative. She has received two treatments of EPO, 40.000 units each, and her Hb came up insignificantly. The doctors want to continue giving her EPO, but not massive doses, instead they want to spread out the dosis and give her several injections per week. Also they want to inject the EPO partly directly into the vein and part under the skin.
What might cause the noneffective response to the EPO administered? Do we have experts in the forum who are experienced in the treatment of septic shock and can advise us on the condition described? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you very much for your support.

My wife Robina died today, March 9, 2007, at about 18.00 hours of septic shock. Although grieving deeply, both my children and I are supported by a marvellous hope. Job expressed it this way:
(Job 14:13-15) "13 O that in SheŽol you would conceal me, That you would keep me secret until your anger turns back, That you would set a time limit for me and remember me! 14 If an able-bodied man dies can he live again? All the days of my compulsory service I shall wait, Until my relief comes. 15 You will call, and I myself shall answer you. For the work of your hands you will have a yearning."
In the more than two weeks of her serious illness I learned even more to rely on our merciful Heavenly Father, Jehovah God.
I also learned quite a number of medical facts about sepsis and septic shock. This is a very common condition in emergency medicine and surely an issue to be reckoned with. It must never be underestimated!
I would welcome for a qualified professional to compile relevant information about this issue and to present it to the publishers of "Awake!" for evaluation, comprehensive research and possible publication for the benefit of our international brotherhood and in fact any interested reader. Sepsis and septic shock is a condition that kills many thousends around the world every year. It is good to be aware of it and to be able to identify its symptoms and if possible to avoid its causes. So Sorry for Your Loss

Dear HDSeeger,

I am so very sorry to hear of your wife's death. She had very serious illnesses, and it is sad that the available treatments were not enough to help her recover. Yes, sepsis and septic shock are more common than many people realize, and I agree that it would be interesting to learn more about these often deadly conditions.

I commend you for your strong faith which will sustain you during this very difficult time.

Sincerely,

I share the expressions so aptly put by dhcatlady, and send my heartfelt prayer that you and your children be strengthened in this time of loss. Your concern for others who may have suffered, or yet may suffer, the effects of this serious illness is very much appreciated. I am certain that among the registered members of NoBlood there are medical professionals who might be as concerned, and would be willing to help compile such information. I would urge any such individuals to share their knowledge here, whether by posting on the Forum or by initiating a Wiki article (I would be happy to help with this). There is a great pool of knowledge and experience represented by those who frequent this site. Most importantly, I am sure, on reading your posts, many of our hearts go out to you and your family as you endure the loss of the wife and mother you all loved.
