I'm a new member and welcome some advice. I live in Ventura California near Los Angeles. In June I was DX w/ prostate cancer. My Urologist recommended LAP Robotic Prostatetectomy. I found a surgeon w/ much experience in robotic surgery but not at a bloodless hospital. He did however agree to respect my request for bloodless surgery during the consult. During pre op an angiogram determined mild luminal irregularities in the major epicardial vessesl w/ worse lesion being a diffuse 30% stenosis of the proximal LAD on the left side of my heart. Although my heart has been determined to be strong enough for surgery, my prostate surgeon now says open surgery instead of robotic surgery would be less risky. He feels it would be easier to control the blood if blood becomes an issue due to my heart condition. Concerned my body won't make up blood volume quickly enough if the situation becomes critical. Doing it open would allow the surgeon to control bleeding easier he says. He also states that the cell saver shouldn't be used because it could re-cycle the cancer cells throughout my system. I really felt the robotic assisted surgery would be less risky and safer. I'm trying to use a spirit of a sound mind and now find that I'm questioning all my research. It seems he's trying to be honest with me but I also feel he is concerned about his rep. Any thoughts on this? E-mails are welcomed.
