A question for anybody willing: Is there bloodless treatment for sphereocytosis other than a splenectomy or EPO regimine? I would appreciate some input. We are talking about a 30 day old infant.

The only "cure" I have heard of is splenectomy. Someone at a childrens facility* may have more for you.

How severe is the disease in this case? I know that makes a difference.

Dear HLC Member,

My name is Rosa Acosta and I am one of the coordinators of the Advanced Blood Conservation Program at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children in Philadelphia, PA. Our program and Medical Director, Carlton Dampier, MD has had some experience with treating this diagnosis in a "bloodless" manner. As Jan mentioned, additional medical information would be helpful e.g. current hemoglobin, but I can understand your intent to be discreet. We would be more than happy to talk to you over the phone re: other additional medical details. Please feel free to contact us at this toll-free number: 800.532.1101.

Thanks,

Rosa Acosta
