We have an 18 month old daughter of Jehovah’s Witness parents that is scheduled for surgery on 4/4/05. She has arthrogryposis and needs an open reduction, femoral shortening. The doctor has assured the parents there will be minimal blood loss. However, the anesthesiologist (who is very cooperative with Jehovah’s Witnesses) is concerned about what options are available to him. The patient weighs only 20 pounds, has severe muscle weakness, and her veins are nearly non-existent. He feels that she may be too small for hemodilution or cell salvage.
Does anyone have any experience with something like this? If you do, or know someone who may feel comfortable consulting with our anesthesiologist, would you contact us?
