Thrombocytopenia in leukemia patient
I have been asked to research some information on treating thrombocytopenia without blood transfusion in a female who has just been diagnosed with AML. Her platelet count is down to 24 and will inevitably drop much lower once she undergoes chemotherapy. I know that Interleukin-11 can be administered to boost platelet production, but that is dependent upon retaining bone marrow function — there may not be much marrow function left after the chemo has done its work. Can anyone point to other strategies for treating platelet deficiency without transfusion? Some good, recent research on the subject would be very useful.
