Spinal Fusion and blood transfusion

Hi,
Im facing this procedure, L5 S1 spinal fusion due to vertebral slippage and degenerative disc disease, One surgeon told me its a very bloody procedure and wouldnt be willing to operate without blood. Is it an operation known for blood loss?
I am aware that there are a variety of methods of approach, one being anterior. Would this account for the comment?
Could a salvage machine be utalized in this procedure?
I would appreciate any thoughts or knowledge you may have in this field.
Thankyou.
