We are gathering research on the subject of Polyheme for a future feature article.
According to the book "Biopharmaceutical Products in the U.S. and European Markets",
PolyHeme is described as: “.. an aqueous [water based] solution of chemically modified, polymerized hemoglobin obtained from donated, outdated Whole Blood. PolyHeme is designed to function the same as hemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying component of human red blood cells (erythrocytes).” PolyHeme was developed and will be manufactured and marketed by Northfield Labs. In Oct. 2002, Northfield Labs. announced a collaboration with the U.S. Army for clinical studies of the battlefield use of PolyHeme (and the Army can be expected to be the primary purchaser of the product upon approval).
