Hypothetically and proactively thinking ahead to a worst case scenario, we would appreciate feedback on the following question we are posing to coordinators/directors of bloodless programs: If one of your pregnant patients was hemorraghing to the extent that there was substantial risk to the viability of the fetus despite employing all available blood conservation strategies, is it the policy of your program NOT to obtain a court order to transfuse based on cases such as In re Brown and In re Doe? Do your doctors support that decision? What provisions do you make for nursing staff involved with such a case who cannot ethically and morally support the mother in her decision to refuse blood transfusions despite the potential risk to the viability of the fetus?
