PROGRAM GOAL
Despite significant advances in obstetrical care, maternal morbidity remains a serious concern to the obstetrical establishment. The goal of this activity is to educate practitioners about causes, risk factors and circumstances surrounding pregnancy-related deaths in order to develop prevention strategies to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality and improve maternity care and public health.
PROGRAM OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of the conference, participants should be able to:
● Gain an understanding of the latest statistics and trends in maternal mortality.
● Describe the main complications leading to maternal mortality.
● Identify, in the antepartum period, women at risk of hemorrhagic complications of pregnancy and childbirth.
● Develop an effective protocol to respond to catastrophic obstetrical hemorrhage in the hospital setting.
● Understand new management options available for patients with placenta previa/accreta.
● Identify who is at risk for thromboembolism and when and how anticoagulant prophylaxis is given.
● Understand the latest management strategies for treating hypertensive crisis in pregnancy.
● Incorporate preconceptual health screening into their women’s health practices.
● Identify medical conditions with exceedingly high morbidity and mortality rates in pregnancy.
● Gain a better understanding of the facts related to relationship violence and how to effectively screen for domestic violence in clinical practice.
● Identify resources available to victims of domestic violence.
● Recognize the contributing factors which lead to puerperal sepsis-related deaths and identify strategies to prevent such outcomes.
